Sigurd W. Christensen

Sigurd W. Christensen is a senior research staff member in the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Archive group at ORNL. He came to ORNL after receiving his PhD in ecology from Yale University in 1973.

Beginning in 1992, Christensen has focused on managing scientific data, initially within the DOE’s Biological Monitoring and Abatement Program where he serves as data manager.  Later in the 1990s, he expanded his data management activities to include the ARM Archive program and DOE’s Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC).  He has recently begun supporting, the Earth System Grid project (for ARM and CDIAC) and the HIPPO project (High-Performance Instrumented Airborne Platform Pole-to-Pole Observations) for CDIAC.

Christensen has extensive experience in problems of national and international significance, including environmental impact assessments for power generating facilities, mathematical and statistical modeling of fish populations, evaluation of acidic deposition effects on fish, investigation of Legionnaires' Disease Bacteria in power plant cooling systems, and development of file-based and relational databases for environmental data. He has served as a principal investigator on a number of projects and has been an expert witness in adjudicatory hearings.

Christensen is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Fisheries Society, and Sigma Xi. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications and reports.
