Marcia L. Branstetter
Marcia L. Branstetter is a research staff member in the Computational Earth Sciences group and the Climate Change Science Institute of ORNL. Branstetter studies the role of continental runoff on the Earth’s climate system, conducts analyses of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenario simulation results, and researches biofuel-climate interactions.
Branstetter obtained both her PhD in geological sciences (specifically hydrology) and her MS in mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin.
Before joining ORNL in 2001 as a postdoctoral research associate, Branstetter was a graduate fellow at the University of Texas’ Jackson School of Geosciences. There, she developed a parallel river routing algorithm for climate models.
In 2009, Branstetter was recognized with an ORNL Significant Event Award (SEA) for her "Science Support for a Climate Change War Game and Follow-Up Support to the U.S. Department of Defense." This international Climate Change War Game (hosted by the Center for a New American Security and ten partner organizations) used war gaming and scenario planning techniques to assess the potential threats and responses to global climate change.
